South Korea is located at 33°-38° east longitude 126°-132° north of Far East Asia. Facing the East Sea is Japan, and facing the Yellow Sea is China. To the north, South Korea is adjacent to North Korea, which is divided by the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
South Korea is a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. There is the East Sea in the east, the Yellow Sea in the west, and the East China Sea (Korean name “Namhae”) in the south. The Namhae Sea is called the “Dadohae” because it has many small and large islands. The Yellow Sea has long tidal (mud) flats, which are the main habitat of sea life. The East Sea is known for its deep water and it is where the volcanic islands, Ulleungdo and Dokdo, are located.
